As of 9/23 Hurricane Rita is approaching and will probably make landfall
within the next 24 hours. It was a Category 5, weakened somewhat to a solid 4, but could potentially increase again
as it crosses another band of warm sea currents. Traffic outflows are still extremely problematic, and storm surges
are expected to be especially worrisome in low-lying areas.
Like Katrina, media coverage is extensive at this time, and our current
level of responsibilities and business precludes extensive posting here. We will provide limited information as the
situation develops, and as we are able, but recommend that you monitor the situation through your usual sources on a regular
basis.
We are especially horrified at the incident with the bus full of elderly
and ill passengers, which has already taken many lives. Apparently oxygen tanks required by some of the passengers exploded
in succession after a fire started on the bus. The framing that's left of the bus is similar to those pictures we've
all seen before in the aftermath of a homicidal bomber in places like Israel.
Although none of us know what will happen in the next 24 hours with Rita,
similarly none of us know what unexpected events will happen in our own lives, or to members of our family, our friends and
other loved ones. Take a moment and pray for the safety of all concerned, and then do something positive today
to either be more prepared yourself, or to help someone else prepare. And don't forget to hug the ones you love, and
tell them outright and verbally that you love them. Life does not go backwards. More disasters are on the
horizon. In fact, the next one may be a lot nearer than you think.
