Iosat (Potassium Iodide Tablets, U.S.P.)
When used in accordance with instructions from public health authorities,
IOSAT is now available to the general public. It is the first and ONLY FDA-approved thyroid blocking agent that can
help to prevent absorption of radioactive iodine that can cause cancer. Nuclear utilities, government and emergency
personnel have long kept potassium iodide (KI) on hand for their own protection, but the general public has had little access
to this valuable drug.
During a radiation release, radioactive iodine may be released into the air -- and then breathed
into the lungs. In most cases, the thyroid gland quickly absorbs the radioactive substance, which can lead to gland
injury. However, the thyroid can't distinguish between this KI stable replacement and the harmful radiation. Therefore,
once the thyroid is filled with the KI in Iosat, the the thyroid becomes "full" and cannot absorb harmful radioactive
iodine for the next 24 hours
.
We quote from the manufacturer's brochure:
"The safety and effectiveness of ..Isosat was proven during the Chernobyl nuclear
crisis where millions were exposed to radiation. According to a recent U.N. report, where KI was not available, over
11,000 individuals have already developed thyroid cancer, many of whom were located more than 200 miles from the accident
site. But where people took KI, no excess cancers of any kind have been seen. That's why the World Health Organization,
the US FDA, and virtually every other independent nuclear safety group on record has urged government stockpiling of KI, or
the private acquisition of KI by individuals.
The recognition that nuclear power plants are vulnerable to terrorist attacks
adds a chilling new importance to having KI. As an official statement by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC notes,
"the NRC did not specifically contemplate attacks by aircraft such as Boeing 757s or 767s and nuclear power plants were not
deisgned to withstand such crashes." Their vulnerability to sabotage or terrorist infiltration of a plant is also well
recognized, and the record is not encouraging. Over the last decade, nearly half of all nuclear plants have failed mock
terrorist attacks, despite prior warnings that an attack was imminent.
Nuclear plants make tempting targets. The destruction of one would spread
radiation for hundreds of miles threatening cancer to anyone without immediate access to KI. Millions would need it,
but would be unable to get it. Though almost every other country has KI for emergency use, the US is the only major
nuclear power in the world without a suficient national stockpile - or any plan for its distribution in an emergency."
Iosat should only be taken in a radiation emergency, at the direction of public
health authorities.

P.S. - A Consumer Warning:
Iosat is a potassium iodide, which is not the same as an iodate. Iodate
is NOT FDA approved and is NOT legally manufactured in the US to pharmaceutical standards for radiation protection.
There are also countefeit products on the market. If you see tablets that use micrograms, instead of milligrams,
or packages of more or less than exactly 14 tablets per package, the product is a counterfeit. These are some reasons
why you should buy only FDA-Approved Iosat, and not try to purchase a questional product from a surplus store or other
less educated source. Consumers should not assume that counterfeits or different formulations, however similar they
may sound, are similar in effectiveness.
